Victory at last! Wootton Bassett 1st XI 4 - 1 Marlborough (8 Dec 2007)
Wootton Bassett Ladies gave themselves an early Christmas present by gaining their first victory of the season, 4-1 at home against Marlborough.
Despite appalling conditions, with heavy rain and a chilly wind, both sides played fast hockey after a rather tentative start. Bassett broke through Marlborough's defence after 20 minutes, and Lisa Turner opened the scoring with a well-struck goal which boosted the home side's morale. Bassett revealed their full potential with swift, accurate passes and strong tackles which culminated before half-time in Turner's second goal.
Marlborough came back vigorously early in the second half, and managed to pull one back, but Bassett maintained their pressure and Turner completed her hat-trick following a slick cross from Natasha Moore. After many short corners, a cross to Sue Lee, at the edge of the circle, was passed swiftly to Katy Cox, who scored Bassett's fourth to round off an excellent team effort.
Wootton Bassett 3rd XI 2 - 0 East Glos 2nds
Bassett 3rds and East Glos 2nds battled valiantly against rain and wind in their Severn Division 3 game at home. Judith Brown scored the only two goals of the game in the first half. Players of the match were Annabel Springthorpe, Lesley Wickens and Emma Harrison.

Nil points for Bassett: Wooton Bassett 1st XI 0 - 2 Bude (1 Dec 2007)
Wootton Bassett Ladies had another disappointing weekend, with no points.
The 1sts started strongly at home against Bude, but the Cornish team put together some good passes and scored after 20 minutes.
In the second half, Wootton Bassett gave their best display this season, with slick passes and excellent ball control which posed a real threat to the opposition. They were unlucky not to equalise, and Bude's determined response sealed victory with a second goal near the end of the game.
Emma Langdon was player of the match.
Cheltenham CS 11 - 1 Wootton Bassett 2nd XI
Bassett 2nd were outclassed by Cheltenham Civil Service, away, in terrible weather conditions.
The visitors' brave efforts stood little chance in the face of fast, skilful opposition. The Civil Service steamrollered their way to an 11-1 victory, in which Bassett's only goal was scored by Natasha Moore.
Players of the Match were Becky Thomas and Rachael Fairbanks.
Wootton Bassett 3rd XI 3 - 7 Painswick
Bassett 3rd and Painswick looked fairly evenly matched at home, but the visitors showed greater skill in scoring goals, and won 7-3.
Jenny Jones scored twice in the first half, but Painswick were 4-2 up at half-time. Lesley Wickens' excellent shot from a short corner added Bassett's third goal, but Painswick kept up the pressure and added three more.
Players of the match were Judith Brown and Jenny Jones.

Poor results for Ladies: Bristol University 6 - 3 Wootton Bassett 1st XI (24 Nov 2007)
Bassett Ladies had another disappointing weekend in which they failed to pick up any points.
The first team faced a strong challenge away at Bristol University in West Clubs Premier Division 2, eventually losing 6-3.
Wootton Bassett's 3rd team lost 1-0 at Lansdown 4ths in a Severn Division 3 game with Becky Johnson player of the match.

Nil points: Yate 2 - 1 Wootton Bassett 1st XI (17 Nov 2007)
Bassett Ladies first, second and third teams all lost on Saturday, with the first team losing 2-1 at Yate. Suzane Montgomery scored their goal.

Black weekend for Bassett: Wootton Bassett 1st XI 0 - 3 Chichester (11 Nov 2007)
Wootton Bassett Ladies had a disappointing weekend in league and AEHA Cup games. In the first round of the All England Hockey Association Cup, Bassett 1sts faced a keen test against Chichester 1sts, who play in the South Premier League.
Chichester's young, skilful players gave a fine, speedy display of teamwork to take a 3-0 lead by half-ime, and this proved to be the final score.
Bassett's tighter defence in the second half and a courageous display by goalkeeper Laura Brown effectively blocked Chichester's onslaught, but despite vigorous efforts the Bassett forwards were unable to pull one back.
Chippenham 2 - 1 Wootton Bassett 1st XI (10 Nov 2007)
On Saturday, the 1sts went into an early lead in the first half of their away game against Chippenham in Premier 2. Player-of-the-match Lisa Turner opened the scoring and Wootton Bassett maintained the pace of their attack.
Chippenham retaliated strongly in the second half and equalised. But the visitors' hopes of a league point faded when Chippenham scored again from a goalmouth scramble in the final minutes of the match, to win 2-1.
Wootton Bassett 2nd XI 2 - 3 Hereford 2nds
Bassett 2nds lost 3-2 at home to Hereford 2nds, who are second in the table. Bassett scored after five minutes, when Sammy Jennings slotted in a short corner pass from Sue Davies. But Hereford then piled on the pressure and equalised just before half- time.
Bassett started the second half strongly and were rewarded when the previous scenario was repeated to put them 2-1 up. However, Hereford's slick, accurate passes yielded an equaliser within five minutes, and they added a third goal later.
Bassett goalkeeper Kathleen Smith played brilliantly to thwart Hereford's many promising attacks, while the home side strove in vain to level the score.
Stroud 7 - 3 Wootton Bassett 3rd XI
Bassett 3rds faced a stiff challenge against Stroud, away, and lost 7-3. Stroud were 4-2 up at half-time, and forged further ahead in the second half.
Bassett's Jenny Jones scored a hat-trick and Becky Johnson completed their tally. .

Mixed bag for Bassett ladies Wootton Bassett 1st XI 1 - 2 Plymouth Marjons (3 Nov 2007)
Wootton Bassett Ladies had mixed fortunes at the weekend, with a defeat and two victories.
The 1sts faced stiff opposition and lost 2-1 at home against Plymouth Marjons, who started strongly with swift, accurate passes, and scored in the 20th minute. Bassett strove for greater possession, and were rewarded when Gemma Richards equalised just before half-time.
In the second half, the visitors continued to press the Bassett defence, which held out until 10 minutes before the end, when Plymouth scored again.
Players of the match were Emma Langdon and goalkeeper Gemma Vinton, whose superb saves thwarted Plymouth's promising attacks.
Bretforton 0 - 1 Wootton Bassett 2nd XI
Bassett 2nd picked up three valuable points when they defeated Bretforton, at Evesham, 1-0.
In a keenly-contested game, Sue Davies scored the only goal in the first half, and Bassett maintained their lead impressively to move nearer to the top of the table.
Wootton Bassett 3rd XI 3 - 2 Gloucester 4ths
Bassett 3rd were tested in the first half of their home game against Gloucester 4th, just below them in the league.
Gloucester attacked strongly and were 2-1 up at half-time, with Abby Iles having scored for Bassett.
The home side's excellent teamwork in the second half yielded goals from Jenny Jones and Iles, to ensure a well-earned 3-2 victory which maintained Bassett's second place in the league. Player of the match was Teagan Buchanan.

Bassett sunk by second half salvo: Falmouth 4 - 1 Wootton Bassett 1st XI (27 Oct 2007)
Wootton Bassett Ladies travelled to Cornwall for their furthest-flung fixture, against Falmouth.
The visitors, refreshed after their overnight stay, started strongly and opened the scoring following a series of short corners when a strike by captain Helen Siviter was deflected neatly into goal by Vicky Field. Falmouth retaliated vigorously and equalised before half-time.
In the second half, Falmouth's decisive attacks yielded three more goals in quick succession. Bassett maintained a spirited offensive despite the absence of subs and they were unlucky not to score again. Player of the match was Lisa Turner.
Wootton Bassett 2nd XI 3 - 1 Cirencester
Bassett 2nds picked up three points when they defeated Cirencester 1st XI 3-1 at home.
Bassett faced strong opposition from the start, and their efforts to penetrate Cirencester's defence were thwarted until the final minute of the first half, when a pass from Sue Davies was slotted home by Helen Bott.
Bassett started the second half confidently, with some slick, short passes. Their determination was fuelled when Cirencester equalised from a deflection, and a short corner pass from Sue Davies was driven home by Sammy Jennings to make it 2-1. Bassett kept up the pressure and were rewarded with Jennings' second goal, following some excellent teamwork by Sue Davies, Natasha Moore and Becky Thomas. Helen Bott was player of the match.
Cirencester 2nds 8 - 0 Wootton Bassett 3rd XI
Bassett 3rd, in a tough away match against a strong Cirencester side, trailed 3-0 at half-time and conceded five more goals in the second half, to lose 8-0.

Bassett rocked by Field injury: Wootton Bassett Ladies 1st XI 0 – 3 East Glos (13 Oct 2007)
Bassett 1st XI played East Glos, at home, on Saturday in a friendly game. The home side’s defence kept East Glos from scoring until the twelfth minute after an injury to Sammy Field had unsettled Bassett. East Glos were quicker on the ball, accurate in their passing and often broke through the Bassett defence with decisive long balls. With the half time score at 1 – 0 Bassett had the chance to equalise, but East Glos took control of the game in the second half and added a further two goals to their tally.

Hereford 2 – 2 Wootton Bassett Ladies 2nd XI
The 2nd XI had a long journey to Hereford to play their Severn Division 1 game on Saturday. Bassett were 2 - 1 to the good at half time with two goals from Sammy Jennings. However, they couldn’t maintain their lead in a tough second half and the match finished as a 2 – 2 draw. This was the 2nd’s second draw in a row, after being promoted last season.

Badgers 1 – 4 Wootton Bassett Ladies 3rd XI
The 3rd XI played an away match against Badgers on Saturday and took their winning run to five games.
They started strongly with two goals from Abi Iles and Jenny Jones in the first 15 minutes of the game. Both goals coming from long balls played out of defence by Lesley Wickens. Bassett saw the half out with some strong defending, soaking up the Badgers’ pressure.
The second half started with a third Bassett goal, when Abi Iles beat the Badgers keeper to score her second of the game. Badgers then came back and, following a string of short corners, were awarded a penalty stroke. The stroke was slotted low into the corner to take the score to 3 – 1 in Bassett’s favour. Bassett responded well and scored a fourth in the final 5 minutes through a Jenny Jones strike, her second of the match and ninth of the season.

Wootton Bassett 1st XI 2 - 4 Isca Dragons 2nds (6 Oct 2007)
Wotton Bassett threw away an ealy lead after Vicky Field opened the scoring in the tenth ten minute.
Isca retaliated strongly and their pressure on the Wootton Bassett defence was rewarded when they equalised from a penalty stroke after 26 minutes. They went on to take the lead with a fine reverse stick shot, but Wootton Bassett captain Helen Siviter made it 2 - 2 before half time.
In the second half, Isca's short, accurate passes, strong tackles and hard shots gained them two further goals, despite a spirited display by Wootton Bassett, who changed their formation and never gave up. Sammy Field was Player of the Match.
Wootton Bassett 2nd XI 2 - 2 Leominster
Wootton Bassett Ladies 2nd XI gained a point when they drew 2-2 in their first encounter with Leominster, at home. After an early injury to Debbie James, Wootton Bassett took the advantage and scored through Natasha Moore. Early in the second half, Sue Davies made it 2 - 0 from a short corner, but Leominster marshalled an impressive attack in the final ten minutes of the game, and scored two quick goals from short corners, to level the score.
Wootton Bassett 3rd XI 7 - 0 Blockley 2nds
Wootton Bassett 3rd XI scored an impressive 7 - 0 home victory against a depleted Blockley side, to pick up three valuable points.
Blockey's efforts to block their D failed to keep Wootton Basssett at bay, and the home side's determined attack yielded two goals in the first ten minutes. In the second half, despite spectacular saves by the Blockey goalkeeper, Wootton Bassett added five more goals. Player of the Match Jenny Jones scored four; Rachael Fairbanks one and Abby Iles two goals.

Fire’s power is too much for Bassett: Wootton Bassett 1st XI 0 - 4 Firebrands (29 Sept 2007)
WOOTTON Bassett Ladies 1st were outpaced and outplayed by Portishead Firebrands in their second league game of the season, at home.
Bassett's numerous chances in the opposition D were thwarted by Firebrands' fine defence.
The home side's confidence was boosted in the second half when goalkeeper Gemma Vinton saved a penalty shot, but they were unable to liaise sufficiently to make a difference, and lost 4-0.
Joint players of the match were Helen Siviter, Sammy Field, Lisa Turner and Sue Lee.
Stroud 2 - 4 Wootton Bassett 2nd XI
Bassett 2nds opened the league season disappointingly when they were defeated 4-2 by Stroud, away.
After starting strongly, and setting up several promising attacks in the first 10 minutes, the visitors were unable to convert their chances.
Stroud came back vigorously, scored from a short corner and kept up the pressure to secure a 2-0 half-time lead.
In the second half, Wootton Bassett struggled to keep possession, while Stroud added two more quick goals.
Bassett rallied, and pulled one back after good interplay by Heather Box and Sammy Jennings. Helen Bott added a second from a well-taken short corner.
Players of the match were Helen Bott, Emma Hayden and Debbie James.
Wootton Bassett 3rd XI 4 - 2 Cheltenham CS
Bassett 3rds, in their first league game of the season, performed well against Cheltenham Civil Service and won 4-2.
Tegan Buchanan opened the scoring, and Judith Brown added a second. The opposition broke through to score before half time, and made it 2-2 early in the second half, but Wootton Bassett's good teamwork yielded two more goals, from Brown and Abi Iles.
Emily Harris was player of the match.

Wootton Bassett 1st XI 2 - 2 Lydney (22 Sept 2007)
WOOTTON Bassett Ladies began their league season with a 1-1 draw at home against newly-promoted Lydney.
The home side took time to settle and keeper Laura Brown was called into action on a number of occasions as Lydney broke through the defence of Sue Lee, Tracy Fieldsend and Sammy Field. Early in the second half the visitors took the lead with a swift goal which spurred Wootton Bassett to retaliate.
Lisa Turner exchanged passes with Jemma Richards before slotting home the equaliser.
Both teams continued to attack but were unable to increase the tally.
North Wilts 4 - 4 Wootton Basett 2nd XI
SAMMY Jennings was on target four times as Wootton Bassett Ladies 2nd shared the spoils in a friendly at North Wilts Ladies.
Jennings opened the scoring, but the hosts soon equalised, took control, and were 4-1 up at half-time thanks to impressive displays from April Watts, Camilla Yerbury, Sophie Richardson and Kim Bird.
Bassett improved after the interval and Jennings struck three more times to level the scores. Richardson (2) and Watts (2) scored for North Wilts.
North Wilts 0 - 4 Wotton Bassett 3rd XI
Bassett Ladies 3rd recorded their third friendly victory, 4-1 away at North Wilts 2nd.
Jenny Jones broke the deadlock after a fine pass from Judith Brown and, despite having chances to increase their advantage, North Wilts equalised before the break, In the second half, Bassett piled on the pressure and goals from Abby Iles, Liz Archer and Judith Brown put the result beyond any doubt.

Bassett reach semis of Mixed sevens Tournament
Bassett reached the semi-finals of the West Wilts seven-a-side mixed tournament at Warminster.
The squad, which qualified from a pool of six teams, was: Helen Siviter, Suzanne Montgomery, Emma Langdon, Sammy Field, Zara Salisbury, Mark Skivington, Grant Kirkup, Matt Johnson and Luke Skivington.
