"The warm acoustic-pop breeze"

"The Portraits defy easy definition. The duo...is one of the most unique and haunting acts to come across this desk." WILDY'S WORLD BLOG, Feb 24th 2009

2009 is a big year for The Portraits.

Their sound has been dubbed “The Warm Acoustic Pop Breeze”, and one excitable French producer referred to them as “The New Beautiful South”.

But there is an artistic edge to the rich Anglo-Irish folk-pop created by Galway’s Lorraine Reilly (guitar, voices) and Bristolian Jeremy Millington (piano, voices, production) which sets them aside from their contemporaries. Imagery is central to their creativity: the poetic lyrics painting reassuring pictures of the passing of time, bereavement, family and regret; the marrying of melancholic words to uplifting, warm vocal harmonies and ghostly piano lines; the eye-catching arty visuals created by Lorraine and used by the duo to animate their live performances; you can’t help feeling all of this would be at home in your local arts centre as much as the nearest gig venue.

The song writing partnership between Lorraine and Jeremy grew over a decade ago when the two were young teachers on the Isle of Wight, UK, Lorraine an art tutor and Jeremy a classroom music teacher. Turning their backs on their day-jobs, the two set out to perfect their craft, working with a series of other musicians and eking out a following on the Bristol and London live gig circuits around the turn of the millennium.

It wasn’t until a move to Western Europe in the early 2000s that the concept of The Portraits began to fine-tune itself. The release to critical acclaim of the highly personal 2006 album "Kin", containing Anglicised shades of the French chanson style, was followed by a period of work in South Africa with local musicians, locally renowned studio wizard Simon "Fuzzy" Ratcliffe, and contributions from Portishead side-kick Pete Judge on brass, all of which led to the completion of the duo’s colourful second album “Timescape", released in late 2008, which blends the choiry feel of the duo’s trademark vocal arrangements with an electronic worldiness, and a new instrumental flavour emanating from the inclusion of cellos, giant African percussion troups, ethnic flutes...and just the odd smattering of Bristolian trumpeting. The result, on record at least, is a wall of vocals à la Brian Wilson and an honest song writing style in the Ben Folds mould. Weaving cellos, flutes, trumpets, electronics and world instruments into an already rich sonic tapestry, the new album provides for a curiously intoxicating listen.

The duo are launching a series of key concerts in Spring 2009 to promote Timescape, and plan also to release a previously unreleased limited edition single with the goal of raising funds for an amazing monastery school in Burma’s second city, Mandalay. All of this while completing work on their third album, due out at the end of the year. It appears that sleep will not be on the agenda for this most promising of creative partnerships in the coming months!

damned audio interface!

Well work on the album was doing nicely until a piece of Tascam audio interface gear packed up on us – three days now until delivery of a replacement. Keep everything crossed for us that we’ll have no more glitches after that, because we only have until Christmas to get this work wrapped up!

New album progressing - one track, Strong, available at RadioIndy

Lorraine and I have been approaching work on the 3rd The Portraits album in quite a different way – many of the new songs have been part of our live repertoire now for about 6 months, and we’ve completely perfected them in a live context prior to committing them to “tape”. We hope this will inspire a rawer, more genuine sounding work. November will be a busy month, tying up some loose ends with the recordings, but we’re looking forward to it. The song that still seems to be setting everyone on fire at gigs is “Strong”, the song we have co-written with Belen Martin Miguez, and Anglo-Spanish affair where we all tie ourselves in vocal knots. An early mix of this song is up for a limited time on our RadioIndy page http://www.radioindy.com/bands/3641/audio.php  This is just a snippet, and far from a final version. Let us know what you think!

Corrigans, Amnesty gigs and an exclusive acoustic video of a new song

Hi

Hope you’re okay, and sorry for the gap in communications.

This is just a quick message to tell you about two new forthcoming dates added to our Autumn tour calendar:

Thursday, 17th September, 2009 @ Corrigans, rue des Cloutiers, La Rochelle
Thursday 29th October, 2009 @ The Amnesty Café, Middle Street, Galway

Really looking forward to both of these!

We are currently beavering away working on tracks for our next CD, and we thought we’d whet your appetite with an acoustic performance of one of the songs, I Am Made Queen, which we’re uploading later today to our Myspace and other sites we are on. We’re almost certain to be playing this track at future gigs – it is one of several on our forthcoming album (due 2010) about Burma.

Thanks for your continued support.

Take care

Gigs, Spanish song and TV appearance

Bonjour à tous

Been a busy few weeks.

Trying to keep all the balls in the air – recording new tracks, playing some brilliant gigs (really enjoyed Corrigans, La Rochelle on 23 July – brilliant reception and crowd), working on the video backdrops for our gigs, organising the next round of gigs, etc.

We’ve laid down the basic tracks for an Anglo-Spanish song from our next CD, co-written with an amazing Spanish singer Belen Martin Miguez. The song is called Strong/Cien Secretos, and is sounding good. We think!

Anyhow – we’ll keep chugging along. Hoping shortly to announce a few more La Rochelle dates for August 2009.

Oh, and our piece (and acoustic performance of Poppy Song) for Mativi TV (www.mativi.fr) should appear around 30th July – you can view it on the above site under the name JT: we’ll be one of the items featured.

Will keep you informed!

Take care

Jeremy

Silence, gigs, recordings exclusive...

Hey all

So sorry for the several weeks of silence…

We have been busying away as ever, writing and recording new material (it’s all going very acoustic and raw sounding at the moment!), planning gigs for the Autumn, and thinking about the logistics of firing off video images to accompany our music as we play.

Loads going on, but we haven’t forgotten our faithful supporters, and we really hope to see you at one of the following dates – full details on our various sites, and more dates to be added shortly.

23 July @ 9pm
CORRIGANS, LA ROCHELLE, FRANCE

30 August @ 12noon
VALE EARTH FAIR, GUERNSEY, CHANNEL ISLANDS

24 September
MID POINT MUSIC FESTIVAL, CINCINNATI, USA (DETAILS TBC)

15 October @ 8pm
ICARUS CLUB, LONDON

22 October @ 8pm
THE TROUBADOUR CLUB, LONDON

Take care of yourselves, and keep in touch with any thoughts.

London gigs

thanks to all who turned out at our two gigs in London, and also to all the brilliant people involved in the running of the nights.

Thanks especially to Mark Aaron James from the Halo and his lovely lady behind the bar (sorry - forgot your name), and to John Televera, Pat the sound man and the lovely lady who did the hosting - name once again has slipped us, for which many apologies.

Hi also to all the other lovely genuine people we've met, both musicians and real people. London is just such a buzzing place full of great people. We're moving in....

Looking forward to coming back soon.

Next stop Bristol on 11th May at Mr Wolfs.... really looking forward to it.
