Razzamajazz!
NWTs Premiere Jazz Ensemble

The Northwest Territories’ premiere jazz band.

Razzamajazz! is a vocal jazz group based out of the Canadian Arctic (Inuvik, Northwest Territories). Their sound is smooth and layered: a mix of original and jazz standards. "The Sauna Sessions", their debut CD, was released in January 2006 - the culmination of 3 years of practicing in an abandoned arctic sauna. It was recorded in Inuvik, mixed in Yellowknife and has a Northern flavour with original song titles such as: 40 Below, Hypothermia and Flight of the Great Snowy Owl.  Spring of 2007 will see the group recording their highly anticipated second CD which is slated for release in autumn.

Razzamajazz! formed in 2002, brings together the talents of Mike Whiteside on guitar, Bob Mumford on alto saxophone, Carrie Young and  Miki O'Kane on vocals and percussion and Christina Wilsdon on keyboards. They bring to the stage their sense of humour, sophistication and the occasional impromptu tap dance!  They continue to play across the Northwest Territories; at Yellowknife's Folk on the Rocks and Aurora Festivals, Inuvik's End of the Road Music Festivals and many other special events including the 2004 Western Premiers Conference.

It was April 2002 when saxaphonist Bob and guitarist Mike started meeting on a regular basis to play jazz. That fall they were joined by vocalists Miki and Carrie and a bass player and Razzamajazz! was born. Their debut performance was at the annual community Christmas concert in Inuvik's Igloo church. For the next two years they played many special events; including the Inuvik Petroleum Show, The NWT Tourism Conference and the Western Canada Premiers Conference as well as appearing regularly at the Cabin Lounge in the Finto Hotel. In 2003 and 2004 they performed at Folk on the Rocks in Yellowknife. In the fall of 2004 the bassist moved away but two weeks later the group met pianist Christina Wilsdon, who had just moved to town and has played with the group since. In March of 2005 they created a temporary recording studio in the Lion's Club meeting hall near Inuvik's scenic Boot Lake. They spent three sunny days and Aurora filled nights recording the "Sauna Sessions" which was released in Dec. 2005.
